EYEWITNESS NARRATIVES OF PARTICIPANTS IN HISTORIC EVENT

257. [ATOMIC BOMB ARCHIVE] Important atomic bomb handwritten eyewitness accounts by original participants. JAMES CORLISS, the flight engineer of the third plane of the Nagasaki mission, deceased, and bombardier TOM FEREBEE (1918-2000) of the Enola Gay, pen six- and five-page signed manuscripts: eyewitness accounts to the most important event of the 20th Century. Ferebee's account is more poignant, as he actually threw the switch at Hiroshima. Corliss draws illustrations of plane positions and the famous mushroom cloud. Also included are six items pertaining to the event, and signed by others closely associated with it. On August 6, 1945 pilot Paul Tibbets and the crew of the B-29 Enola Gay dropped an atomic bomb over the city of Hiroshima, Japan, the first wartime use of an atomic weapon in history. Three days later, pilot Charles Sweeney and the members of the B-29 Bocks Car dropped a second atomic bomb over the city of Nagasaki. Those bombings and the Japanese capitulation shortly after signaled a major change in the nature of modern warfare as well as raising a number of ethical questions regarding the deployment of weapons of mass destruction. The incredible accounts of both Ferebee and Corliss are in the form of two individual ALsS sent to a "Mr. Norman" who had written to them requesting information about the event. Ferebee's five-page letter, written in blue ink on white lined loose leaf paper, is dated Mar 10, 1997 and begins with some interesting background information regarding his military career. Following that, he writes of the initial secrecy regarding the mission and the practice runs the group flew before the actual flight on August 6th. He writes in part, "...We took off at 0215 AM and approx. 2 hrs later prior to climbing Capt. Parson & Jeppson started arming the bomb, and I observed it from the entrance to the bomb bay. Once that was completed I went back up front to my seat and relaxed until we got to enemy territory. I could see the target at approx. 60-70 miles and when Paul took the heading Dutch gave him I took control by auto-pilot and had very little to do, because the heading was almost perfect. When the bomb left the AC I stood up & watched to see if it was falling free until I could no longer see it as Paul was in a tight turn, and when we leveled out the cloud was at our altitude. It was a horrible sight and I had never seen anything to compare it to. Capt. Parsons & I were to send a message as to our opinion as to where it was a full order detonation. My message to Guam was that it was satisfactory and Capt. Parsons was very satisfactory, and that caused a delay of approx. one hour before it was forwarded to the president. After taking a good look at the city we continued on to Tinian. I don't remember much conversation as I just took it easy. When we landed there was a huge crowd & Gen. Spotz took over. Paul and B/Gen Jim Davies came to me & said Tom you have just dropped the first Atomic Bomb and you can talk now the president has announced it. That is the first time I ever heard the word atomic used with the project. I was confused as to just what it meant, and it had to be explained to me just what had happened. My main concern was that it had worked and that maybe soon all the millions of people could go home. I never dreamed that today we would still be asking questions about it. I was married after the war & had 4 boys & it was not discussed at home and has never bothered me and I would do it again under the same circumstances. I'm sure it saved millions of lives by helping bring the war to a close." The letter is signed "Tom Ferebee, Bombardier." Corliss' six-page letter, also penned in blue ink on white lined loose leaf paper, is dated Oct 24, 1988, and is highlighted by a number of hand-drawn diagrams displaying the positions of the planes during the Hiroshima bombing. He writes in part "...Bombing Run on Hiroshima-Aug 6, 1945 (Diagram 1) The Enola Gay was carrying the atomic bomb. The other two airplanes, that hadn't been given a name yet, was carrying some civilian scientists, and on my airplane there was equipment to measure the shock waves. The I. P. is a point on the ground that you pick out to start the bomb run. That is where the bombardier takes over control of the airplane, and steers it by turning knobs on the bomb sight. He has the control until he drops the bomb and closes the bomb bay door. Then the pilot takes over again. (Diagram 2) When Col. Tibbets started the bomb run. The other two B-29's started a 360 degree turn, taking four minutes to complete, and came back to its original position at the I. P. When the bomb is dropped from the airplane Col. Tibbets made a 90 degree turn and dropped 2000 ft. to gain speed and get away from the explosion and shock waves. The two other B-29's continued on toward the target. (Diagram 3) The bomb exploded directly in front of us, so we had a perfect view of what took place. We had variable density goggles on and turned to total darkness, when the bomb went off it was so bright that I had to squint. When the brightness subsided I turned them back to daylight and watched the mushroom type ball of fire start to raise. We flew around it several times for about 20 minutes until it had raised up to our altitude of 30,000 ft. All the time it was churning all around, sometimes inside out, with red, yellow, purple and brown colors, where it was sucking everything up from the ground that was loose; cars, building, bodies, dirt, etc." The letter is signed "James Corliss (Dick)" These two extraordinary accounts are accompanied by six other related documents, each of which has been signed by a former crew member of the atomic bomb run. Included is an ALS, 2pp, Jun 2, 1986, signed in black ink by JAMES GALLAGHER, Asst. Flight Engineer/Nagasaki mission. Gallagher also writes in response to a request by "Mr. Norman" for information regarding the bombing run; also two photocopied museum documents each signed along the bottom border by James Gallagher in black ink; an ALS, 1p, Aug 3, 1988, signed in black ink by R. D. CURRY, Radio Operator/Nagasaki mission, who briefly relates his own remembrances of the bombing at Nagasaki; TLS by commander FREDERICK BOCK aboard Bockscar, Nagasaki mission, in black ink, undated. Bock relates his own account of his flight over Nagasaki; and last, an ALS, 1p, Dec 3, 1988, signed in blue ink by Tail Gunner GEORGE R. CARON of the Enola Gay, also recounts his role over Hiroshima. All, with the exception of the Bock letter evidence normal folds and in overall excellent condition. An historic archive of fascinating first-person narratives of the utmost import. The Welsh born British adventurer, soldier, and author, who mobilized the Arab revolt against the Ottoman Empire during World War I, lobbied for Arab independence at the 1919 Paris Peace Conference. His exploits became the basis for the legend of 'Lawrence of Arabia.' Signed draft of a witty TLS, 1p, 81/4"x103/4", Southampton, May 3, 1934. Nice literary content. Writing to his publisher Frank Vigor Morley, whom he addresses as "F. V." Morley was director of the firm Faber & Faber but, following in his father's footsteps, he was also a mathematician. In full, "Next you are at it please explain to me the subtle distinction between 'USA' and 'USA origin' in your list of directors. I suspect something now, but hope it's not true! Thank you for the books. The mathematics are terrible. With an origin, an inheritance, an example like that you have really done very well. From our dead selves to higher things. Excellent. I add it proudly to my Chamber of Horrors shelf, where it will stand between Roy Campbell's autobiography and the life of Alice B. Toklas. `````````Do not flatter your ancestor with the idea that there are the three aristos of the Chamber of H. shelf. They represent the as yet nascent 1934 products. Or was Alice B. T. 1933? I forget. Jeffers I had lost sight of since 'Cawdor', which disappointed me some years ago. He does not go forward, in this last: and as you say, for a poet to stand still is to regress. I suppose Jeffers is over 30, and does not yet know it. Do you know that Alfred Noyes once felt new? I apologize for the ink. The only carbon ink that will run in a fountain pen is Bourgeois: and that is sold only by Reeve in the bottom of Charing Cross Road. I have emptied my bottle of all but the too-thick dregs: I cannot demand more by post: but as a soon as the R.A.F. will pay my expenses to London for a working day I shall go to the shop and buy some, and again charge the excellent pen. Only carbon ink is ink - that I wholly agree. Patience. I badly want to reach London again, but cannot afford a private visit." Boldly signed. Lawrence had signed in type "Shaw" but penned "T. E.," crossing out the typed initial. Lawrence adds beneath his signature, "On reading all this through I have to add that Jeffers is a good and true poet, and not like Noyes. I only used Noyes as an absurd reduction - which is a phrase from higher mathematics, meaning very little." Light general toning; light wrinkling; left edge slightly uneven; else Fine example.
