"WHAT THE HELL IS A LIFE STORY"

874. KATHARINE HEPBURN (1907-2003). Enduringly dominant star of emancipated feminine roles who won four Academy Awards over her long career. Her handwritten notes for her autobiography Me, 70+pages on lined yellow paper, 81/2"x13", n.d. Her memoirs were published in 1991. Also contains a few extraneous notes she kept in another hand from this period. A glimpse into the mind of one of the most outspoken actresses of stage and screen. Several of the passages seem to be taken directly from Me as if Hepburn jotted down notes as she remembered her career. Some of her comments include her uncertainty about writing the story: "What is this thing I'm trying to do - writing my life story - what the hell is a Life story. Is it I was born I did I died. Or is it a sort of summary of all the happenings which have really made mine personal..." There are wonderful nuggets regarding Hollywood, i.e. "David Lean is a name in motion pictures which stands for perfection - every department - the sound - the photography - the casting is delegated to persons at the very top of their profession. The locations are chosen with the utmost care - There is a great story about the making of Dr. Zhivago. It was a location where a troop of men & officers were to ride through a grass field - David had them rehearse it - there he stood & he had them do it again - no, it wasn't what he'd imagined - finally he called off work. We won't get this shot today he announced. It's not effective...we'll get it in a month or so. We'll plant hundreds of red poppies through the grass - won't that be lovely - you'll ride through them - much better..." The actress also looks back to uncertain times: "Remember that time when my career fell apart - I was getting...no offers" She was finally offered a script: "It was the first offer I'd had in 6 months - but I didn't like the script - then Phil Barry wrote Philadelphia Story." She also describes life at the family home at Fenwick. "There was a pier at Fenwick & the diving board was on the pier - the height naturally varied with the tide - There was a railing on the pier about 21/2 ft. high - in order get a better spring I would stand on the railing - I went...to the end of the board to dive - either a jack knife or a swan dive - a one & one half - a somersault..." Approached regarding the possibility of doing a film biography, the indignant actress objected: "If a film is to be made of my life it seems to me that I should be the one to make it not someone like yourself who has no real...or personal knowledge of me or my family. For you to proceed with this venture could only result in a violation of my rights of privacy, both proprietary and personal." Hepburn was noted for her outspoken support of Planned Parenthood. Some of these notes include what appear to be outlines or the beginnings of speeches she was slated to give. "There was a desperate need for this hate law. Now almost 20 years later a new group is threatening to repeal this law. They are threatening to reduce this freedom for woman to decide whether or not they wish to produce a child - Why they say human life is sacred - I agree but which human life - and the very fact of why women a single sex should bear this burden. Must we not begin to consider quality of life. Must we without thinking open the door to all possible sperms & egg combinations we are seriously over populated..." A staunch activist, Hepburn also wrote several notes in an attempt to save a Connecticut River. Her plan was to inspire as many people as she could to vote on January 30th to save the river. In part, she wrote, "Yes - ashamed of ourselves - & it will be too late - it will be gone never to return...Money will have won again... - think of what could happen - and then reach into your pockets. We must save our river - Vote yes on January 30th Ours - your - mine - Now & forever We'll find the money." Much of the material is transcribed, given the elder actress's unsteady hand. Scattered wrinkling; occasional dampstains and wear. LOA PSA/DNA. Est: $15000-23000
