870. INDIANA JONES FILM PROP A "human" skull prop used during the production of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom weighing almost five pounds and in remarkably good condition. Accompanied by LOA from original owner stating he had purchased the skull from Sotheby's in 1999. It had been displayed at the famed Sands Hotel and Casino original movie memorabilia wing in Atlantic City until the display was closed and the props and costumes consigned to Sotheby's. A long black cloth robe, 58" in length, worn by Brando during filming of the production with wardrobe label of Bermans & Nathans, London stitched to inside collar for "Jorel Brando / Superman 12019." Snaps on shoulder area to affix onto costume near armholes. Excellent condition. Est: $2000-5000

   874. [FLASH GORDON] Ming Ajax Guard sword used in the production of this 1980 film. The red handled movie prop with painted resin-based sword was used in scenes aboard the rocket Ajax by the Ming guards of the Prince of Ardentia. The sword with hilt is 221/2" in length and evidences some wear with abrasions along raised fuller at center along the length of the sword. Accompanied by COA by Movie Bits, Essex, England, a member of the Movie Props Association. Est: $2000-5000

   875. [BEN HUR] This classic 1959 epic film starring Charlton Heston won 11 Academy Awards. Roman short sword and scabbard with leather strap used during production of the film. This sword is overall 231/2" in length with metal hilt and ornate pummel with a 161/2" blade beneath wood counter guard. The blade evidences some rust, especially near counter guard on one side. The metal and "leather" covered scabbard with brass ornament has a brass chain and leather strap. The strap is worn with part of clasp lacking. Bottom metal scabbard tip is loose. Overall in Fair/Good condition. This is still an attractive displayable memento from the legendary film. Est: $200-400

   876. [BEN HUR] A Roman helmut used during production of the 1959 epic. The metal helmut with neck protector and moveable cheek and brow protectors evidences some rust and occasional light impressions from use; else intact and in good condition. Est: $100-300

   877. [ALEXANDER THE GREAT] Epic 1956 film starring Richard Burton tracing the life and battles of the young Macedonian king, one of the most successful military commanders in history. A cast steel hero's sword, one of the six swords acquired from British armourer Berman & Nathans of London, and used by Burton during the film's production. Signed COA from film and theatrical specialists Arms & Archery in Ware, Hertfordshire, England. Est: $500-1200

[ZULU] This 1964 film starring MICHAEL CAINE was based on a true event at Rorke's Drift in Natal, South Africa during the Anglo-Zulu War in 1879, when a small contingent of British soldiers narrowly withstood an assault by four to five thousand Zulu warriors on their garrison. A Zulu shield prop, 541/2"x253/4", used in the film and signed by Caine in black felt tip, adding his character's name "Lt. Bromhead," one of the 11 recipients of the Victoria Cross for gallantry in his defense of the outpost. General wear; else VG condition with strong signature area. From the same film, also present is an Enfield-Martini Henry carbine rifle prop with bayonet and shoulder strap supplied by Bapty & Co., London. Wood frame is cracked near rear barrel with crack in top action metal plate; else intact with normal wear. Letters of authenticity by Bapty & Co. for both props. Est: $400-800

   880. [ELVIS PRESLEY] (1935-1977). Legendary "king of rock and roll" and popular film star. Navy yachting cap with black visor and yellow anchor insignia above visor and strap band personally worn by Elvis. His name is penned on Paramount label on inner sweatband, indicating it was worn in one of his films for them. Excellent condition with minor wear at front inner sweatband. Accompanied by letter of provenance signed by ALAN FORTAS, a member of Presley's Memphis entourage who was also the foreman at Elvis' Circle G ranch. A friend of the singer's since boyhood, Fortas states the cap was given to him by Elvis in the 1960s. Also present is a casual photograph of Elvis wearing the cap. Attractive Elvis memento.    881. ELVIS PRESLEY Colorful Hotel International room service menu signed twice by Elvis. Inscribed and signed on front "To Susie from Elvis Presley" in black ballpoint, and on reverse he signs a second time, "To Susie and Bill, Thank you for the beautiful bible. Elvis Presley." Fine example. Accompanied by b/w photograph of the singer in the hotel signing autographs surrounded by dozens of fans. When Elvis returned to performing live at the hotel he would often wander the corridors late in the morning hours posing with fans and signing autographs as in this example. Very nice. Accompanied by Global COA. Plus one of his blue satin tour scarves with dark blue facsimile signature taken from his plane The Lisa Marie to be used during his winter tour in 1977. He died on Aug 16 before the tour ever took place. Accompanied by an Affidavit, May 20, 2005, signed by the flight attendant who stayed on after his death "while the plane was used by the family...The scarves were stocked...and ready to be used on the tour...I obtained these scarves directly from the plane..." Other markings of this brightly colored poster include "FE 3283" at bottom border and blue backstamp "Help The Beatles / 1 Sh. 65/293." These posters were supposed to be returned to the manufacturer, National Screen Service Corp., after the film was exhibited else destroyed.    915. DANIEL C. BLUM (1899-1965). Prominent theatre producer and critic; author; founded Theatre World Awards in New York with Norman McDonald, and John Willis in 1944. Collection of three of his Year Book calendars in which he personally recorded his daily activities for the years 1946, 1958 and 1960. Each is bound in black leather, 51/2"x8". Nearly every page has at least a brief entry, some with heavier schedules than others. There are many references to parties, dinners, theatre shows, travels to Palm Springs, Beverly Hills, London, and other destinations, and, of course, his private times. Taken together these journals comprise a "Who's Who" of the New York theatre scene and Hollywood guests. Names include Pola Negri, Lillian Gish, Horst Bucholz, Carol Channing, Helen Hayes, Robert Stack, Joey Bishop, Hedda Hopper, Marlon Brando; Robert "Bill" Taylor; Charlton Heston, Joan Collins, Warren Beatty, Gilbert Roland, and many others. There are addresses, phone numbers, and interesting details of dinner parties such as who sat where for one in particular. According to his calendar, Blum spent a fair amount of time with Lillian and Dorothy Gish. Mar 20, 1960: "Start dieting - Alan Ladd House 323 Camino Norte"; Special Data 1946: "Marlon Brando - 158 W. 58th St. CI5-5755"; May 20, 1958: "Theatre World Award Party" listing the guests. Also tucked into the calendar-diaries are a few extra papers including the New York driver's license of Blum's friend and companion, Stephen A. Melik, whom he references more often in the later years. Entries are made in pen and sharp pencil in his clear, legible script. The calendars are internally Fine. The front cover of the 1958 Year Book is torn from the inside cover calendar, completely detached with small outside cover loss and spine lacking, else intact; 1960 cover detached but present. A captivating insight into mid-twentieth century New York theatre scene. Est: $200-450

Both to his friend Anne on his beloved Verney Farm letterhead regarding his love for farming and horses, baseball, and also mentioning his thoughts on writing. Excellent content. In part: "Got back from the Winter Fair at Toronto yesterday and your note was awaiting me. Had you been there you'd have felt the urge to get back on a horse despite the early experience with that Irish jumper. Everything was top-flight from ponies to Percherons, Hackneys to Holsteiners. The coaching class...put us back into the 18th & 19th century...as I've been trying to escape into the 18th century for years. It was a well-rounded, well balanced show with flowers and farm produce stressed as well as cattle and horses...Regarding my writing, something I don't have the discipline necessary to engage in the prolonged effort which is after all what the job is. Good writing, I've always felt, comes from the 'belly' and if it is tossed off lightly it is 'hack' and recognizably so. I've known some good ones, Maxwell Anderson, George Kelly, John Van Druten among them and with them it was all work with a large 'W'...Keep well and give your 'ma' my love - with a hunk for yourself..." In a second letter, Cagney encourages Anne's writing, indicating he enjoyed the pieces she sent "with the humor gauged nicely and without effort...The reader can't catch you being funny; a thing some of the lads and in our business lasses never learned...Your enthusiasm for baseball and the kids who make it what it is, I share completely. Total effort is always as heart breaking for the enthusiastic viewer as it is for the performer. I watched Cleef Myers catch Matty one day around 1908 and he, in chasing a high foul, plunged head first into the open box to the right of home plate to get the ball. He caught it and the stands screamed their approval. That appealed to the ham in me and of course I became a catcher. The first joints on my right hand bear witness to the number of fouled tips they stopped from 1910 to 1920. It was only sand lot ball but it might just as well have been Red Sox vs. Cards. I did a number from the Cohan picture at the Polo Grounds in 1943. It was a charity day...Walter Johnson was to pitch to Babe Ruth..." Cagney goes on to describe the lineup and his emotions and then writes about the Boston lineup that lost to another team. Each is darkly penned and signed. Fine examples. Est: $250-500

993. HARRY HOUDINI Professional name of Ehrich Weiss (1874-1926). One of America's most renowned magicians, noted for his uncanny abilities as an escape artist and illusionist. He is also credited with exposing the tricks of many fraudulent spiritualistic mediums of his day. Darkly signed clipped signature, "Houdini" in black ink beneath typed closing, 31/4"x1". Attractively double matted with an original 1925 promotional broadside, 51/2"x9". Headlined "Challeng[e]" in red letters, the employees of E. C. Atkins & Co. have issued a challenge to Houdini to allow them to construct "an ordinary packing case of heavy lumber, and guarantee to nail you in this case and rope it up so that you will not be able to escape from same..." After his examination of the case, they "reserve the right to renail each board before you enter to prevent any preparation of same on your part..." At bottom margin Houdini accepts the challenge to take place at the Murat Theatre on Oct 14: "Under the Condition that the Box Must Not Be Airtight."
